Today, the FDNY remembers Lieutenant Joseph Graffagnino (left), of Ladder 5, and Firefighter Robert Beddia (right), of Engine 24, who made the Supreme Sacrifice on this day in 2007 at a devastating 7-alarm fire at the former Deutsche Bank building in Lower Manhattan. Lt. Graffagnino and Firefighter Beddia were among the 275 Firefighters and 70 units that responded to the high-rise fire at 130 Liberty Street. The two members became trapped on the 14th floor of the building, which was undergoing demolition. Lt. Graffagnino was an 8-year FDNY veteran who began his career at Engine 24 in 1999. He later worked at Engine 284, before moving to Ladder 5 in December 2006. He was promoted posthumously to the rank of Lieutenant on June 19, 2008. Firefighter Beddia, a 23-year FDNY veteran, was appointed to the Department in 1983 and spent his entire career at Engine 24, receiving three citations for bravery.

Today FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro and New York City Department of Design and Construction Commissioner Dr. Feniosky Peña-Mora broke ground on a new firehouse for Rescue 2 in Brooklyn. The planned 21k sq ft facility provides parking for multiple apparatus, as well as ample space for tools and workshops, SCUBA equipment storage, locker rooms, fitness equipment and training. The entire firehouse has been designed with training in mind, including specific areas for trench rescue and confined space rescue training, a room to simulate the smoke-filled environments in which Firefighters operate, and an elevated area that allows Firefighters to train to rappel from the roof of a building to perform a rescue. The construction plans continue the Department’s goal of sustainable and energy efficient facilities with several green elements incorporated into the design; including a solar water heating system, 100% LED lighting with motion sensors to reduce electricity usage, and a green roof to help mitigate storm water runoff from the site. The total cost for construction and design is $32 million. Rescue Company 2 was formed in 1925 to establish special rescue capability in the borough of Brooklyn. Originally located at 160 Carlton Avenue, the current home of Rescue Company 2 is at 1472 Bergen Street. The company is staffed daily by five Firefighters and one officer and responds to emergencies throughout the borough, and into neighboring boroughs, as needed.

If I got called again, I’d do it all over again without question.” – FDNY Firefighter Michael Wilson from Ladder 166 in Brooklyn, who joined the Be The Match Registry as a Probationary Firefighter at the FDNY Training Academy on Randalls Island in 2003. In 2010, a call from New York Blood Center notified Firefighter Wilson that he was a match for a female patient in need of a transplant. He donated peripheral stem cells at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in June, 2010. On Friday, April 29, Firefighter Wilson will meet his match for the first time, at the 12th annual Honor Roll of Life inductee ceremony at FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn.

“We were in the middle of checking the rigs, we had the apparatus door open and a Good Samaritan passed by and said they thought they saw the man who was missing. We walked with them to the corner of the block, and met him there. He had been missing overnight. He was shaken and cold. We brought him back to the firehouse and warmed him up, tried to comfort him.” - FDNY Probationary Firefighter Raymond Pyrcz from Engine 205 in Brooklyn, who was approached this morning by persons who recognized Michael Yam, a man whose photo was shown on the evening news, standing on a street corner in Brooklyn Heights. Mr. Yam had been missing since Wednesday afternoon and was last seen in Prospect Park. EMS members David McMinn and Andrew Ramos from Station 31 arrived at the firehouse and took over patient care. FDNY firehouses are safe havens under the Abandoned Infant Protection Act. If you find a missing person, please call 911 for assistance.

On Saturday, April 9, the 43rd Annual FDNY vs NYPD Charity Hockey Game was played at Madison Square Garden. Prior to puck drop, the FDNY Hockey Team donated a van to the FDNY Fire Family Transport Foundation, and proceeds from the event benefitted the FDNY Fire Family Transport Foundation and the New York Police & Fire Widows' & Children's Benefit Fund. Despite a valiant comeback performance in the third period, the NYPD earned bragging rights this year, winning the game with a final score of 6-5.

While on routine patrol, Officer Joe Morgan of the Des Moines (IA) Police Department spots a speeding motorbike and gives chase. The fleeing suspect slips away after Officer Morgan misjudges the height of nearby train tracks - which disable his vehicle. While the officer advises dispatch to halt all impending traffic, he hears the horrifying sound of a fast approaching train. Fortunately, the train is redirected in time and a catastrophe is avoided -- so he thinks. A little while later, a second train approaches from the opposite direction as several of Officer Morgan's fellow officers anxiously try to figure out how to move the disabled vehicle. Eventually , the second train is also redirected and the vehicle is safely removed from its precarious position. The embarrassed officer's amused supervisor wonders if he should change the officer's evaluation.

battalion 2 had annual inspection this week. Annual inspection is a little like spring cleaning at your home. All members of each station spend countless hours (in-between running 911 calls) cleaning, painting, shining, and dusting every nook and cranny of the station. They also wax, wipe, and polish each truck, engine, and rescue and all the equipment carried on each apparatus. Why do we have annual inspection? Here are just some of the reasons: - firefighters spend 1/3 of their lives living at the fire station and annual inspection ensures they are living in a clean, safe environment. - cleaning and examining the tools ensures they are able to operate safely and efficiently on scene of every emergency - cleaning the apparatus (including underneath the engines and trucks) allows members to see any problems, cracks, or damage so they are sure the vehicles are ready to respond when the call comes in. Your LAFD members take great pride in the appearance of every station and apparatus. Please stop by any station and take a look for yourselves. The command staff of LAFD Central wants to say job well done by all stations in battalion 2.

This day beginnith with rumors of a rare airplane coming to FLL, which did not happen (Part 2 will feature this special airplane, but I am not revealing what is is yet). Other than that, the day was filled with special surprises from Norwegian's A332 substitution and meeting up with SFRTA and Amtrak Finatic. Sorry about the poor video quality, I had some issues with the camera when I was trying to transfer the videos for uploading. Part 2 will hopefully have better quality videos. Enjoy!

Suspect Breaks Pipe, Floods Hotel / Hollywood RAW FOOTAGE LAFD TV

HOLLYWOOD - A male suspect was caught in the attic of the Hollywood Historic Hotel early this morning. The suspect stepped on a sprinkler line and it began to flood the 3rd 2nd and 1st floors. LAPD was able to catch the suspect before fleeing and detain him. LAFD was on scene and was able to get the water off. It's unknown at this time how long the suspect had been up there. LAFD is still on scene helping with the clean up.

“The umbilical cord was still attached when we got there, the mother was at the bottom of the basement stairs and she had just given birth to the baby. She was in a bit of a panic, she did not plan to give birth at home. Our guys were all EMTs before they became Firefighters and they knew exactly what to do, they’d had excellent training,” says FDNY Lieutenant Joseph Malatestinic from Engine 323 in Brooklyn, who supervised Firefighter Dwight Ferguson and Firefighter Terrence Sykes from Engine 323, and Firefighter Vincent Hopkins from Engine 233, when they were called to assist with the birth of a baby girl at a home in Brooklyn. Says Firefighter Ferguson, “It was difficult for us to get down the stairs, we couldn’t have made it without the support of our Lieutenant. He removed the door from its hinges so we could make it down with our equipment. When we got there, the baby was blowing bubbles but she wasn’t crying yet. When we used the suction she let out a big cry, and we said ‘Your baby is okay, your girl is doing well.’ My six years with EMS prepared me for this. It was a great team effort.” Firefighter Sykes added, “I’ve been on scene for more than a dozen deliveries, and we rely heavily on our training in medical situations just like we do with everything else. We try to keep the patient as calm as possible, and we were under very good supervision. We brought the baby out to the ambulance, and EMS took over patient care.” The mother and baby were transported to a local hospital and are doing well. 4-7-2016 L.A. Firefighters, Task Force 94, Task Force 66, Battalion 13 first on scene at 4245 West 62nd Street in Hyde Park reported a one and two story house with heavy fire showing. Two additional Task Forces were immediately requested on top of the original assignment. Firefighters quickly laid lines, attacking the fire in the rear of the two story add-on, inside and out. Firefighters also went to work protecting the exposures on both sides. Access to the fully involved structure was limited. The main bulk of fire was knocked down in an hours time. Two persons, a man and woman, reportedly perished in the fire. An elderly 80 year old man who reportedly jumped from the house was transported to a local area hospital via paramedics. L.A. County Fire assisted on scene. Damage was extensive. Arson is investigating the tragic greater alarm late night blaze.

Today, FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro swore in FDNY Deputy Commissioner of Governmental Affairs and Special Programs Laura Kavanagh, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer (CDIO) Cecilia B. Loving, and promoted 24 FDNY officers in the Fire and EMS Officer Promotion Ceremony at the FDNY Training Academy on Randall’s Island. Together, the newly promoted members represent 450 years of experience with the Department.

Miami Police Chase

MIAMI (CBSMiami) — A 34-year-old man accused of several crimes has been officially booked at a Miami-Dade jail on Saturday.
Charges include aggravated battery on an officer for Keith Antonio Michel — and that’s just the beginning.
It started when Lauderhill Police put out an alert for Michel after they said he stabbed his girlfriend multiple times the night before.
When Miami Police spotted him in a red Mercury and attempted to pull him over near N.W. 7th Avenue and 13th Street, they said he stepped on the gas and fled.
At one point, he stopped abruptly and tried to run over an officer, forcing him to fire his weapon. But Michel then took off again.
“During the course of that pursuit two Miami police officers discharged their firearms,” said Chief Rodolfo Llanes.
A caravan of police cruisers chased the car as it weaved through traffic and nearly clipped several cars.
The chase finally ended violently behind a restaurant at the corner of N.W. 11th Avenue and 119th Street. More than a dozen officers surrounded the car with their guns drawn.
The suspect then put the car in reverse and almost pinned an officer and his K-9 while backing up.
Only then were police finally able to pull the guy out of the car.
“This was a vicious attack and we’re very thankful that this violent individual s off the streets,” said Lt. Greg Solowsky of the Lauderhill Police Dept. “You saw what he did when the police officers tried to stop him. So based on his actions from yesterday and today I’d say he’s extremely dangerous.”
Michel has a criminal history dating back to at least 2005, going to prison for crimes ranging from grand theft to battery of an officer.
His girlfriend is in critical condition but thankful after learning he was caught.
“She’s extremely grateful the Dade County professionals took this violent person off the streets and very happy with the outcome,” said Lt. Solowsky.
Michel is also facing charges in Broward for attempted murder.

“The occupants outside the building were waving us in, they said that a disabled man was trapped on the first floor in his apartment. When we got to the bedroom there was heavy smoke and a growing fire inside. There was a lot of debris in the apartment. Firefighter Riley found the patient in the corner of the bedroom. He had rolled off the bed while trying to escape, and he was unconscious,” says FDNY Lieutenant Andrew B. Bowman of Ladder 58, who assisted Firefighters Christopher J. Reilly and Thomas J. Wutz, Jr. last night with the rescue of a patient in the Bronx. Says Firefighter Reilly, “As soon as I opened the bedroom door, I got hit with a wave of heat. The fire was to my left and was rolling up the wall, and we couldn’t see at all. Firefighter Wutz held back the fire with the can [portable extinguisher] and I started checking the floor, feeling around. When I felt his shoulder I said, ‘I’ve got him!’ but he was in such an awkward, twisted position amongst the debris that I couldn’t get behind him. Firefighter Wutz put down the can and came to help me, and we carried him out through the fire, crouching as it rolled over our heads. I could hear the patient breathing, so I knew he was alive.” Once outside, additional units took over patient care while members from Engine 45 and other companies brought the fire under control. The patient was transported to Jacobi Medical Center. Los Angeles Police Chase (March 27, 2016)

A female carjacking pursuit suspect led officers on a high-speed chase, jumping curbs and speeding through residential areas, before she attempted to jump into the driver's side of a police cruiser at the end of the chase.
The carjacking victim was speaking out Sunday after the bizarre pursuit.
"I was in the house maybe 15-20 seconds when I heard the car start," Christy Adair said.
Adair said her car was taken right from her driveway.
"I ran outside and I saw a woman backing my truck out of the driveway and I had a bag in my hand and I threw the bag at her," Adair said. "She put it in drive towards me very fast, so I got out of the way. I just was screaming at her to stop."
Adair called 911 and then started tracking her truck's location with the "Find my iPhone" app, as she left her phone in the truck.
Police began pursuing the woman in Adair's brown truck around 6 p.m. in the Simi Valley area on Easter Sunday, the Los Angeles Police Department said.
The driver sped through a grassy area on the freeway as well as on the shoulder before exiting to residential streets in the Canoga Park area.
LAPD officers rammed the truck with their cruisers in order to get the woman to stop.
The truck spun out before the woman exited the driver's side.
As she tip-toed slowly toward officers, she suddenly sprang toward the driver's side of a police cruiser and nearly made it into the cab before officers converged upon her and slammed her to the ground.
The driver was loaded onto a stretcher and into an ambulance following the pursuit end.
No injuries were reported in the initial carjacking, police said.

They died doing a job they loved, honoring their sworn oaths to protect life and property. Six decades later, we stand together, members of the same Department they proudly served. Generations of Firefighters have served and retired since their death, but no matter the amount of time that has passed, we make certain their memory lives on. The man was apparently chasing down his wife because she didn't give up more money for "rent." The guy, according to his wife, had some drinks prior to the incident. As you can see, he was belligerent from the beginning. The tazing might seem a little premature, but the man is twice the size of the cop.... 
I do not own the rights to this episode, just trying to answer the questions about how the tazing came to be!

LAFD members talked about fire safety, showed them the fire engine/equipment we carry, and also talked about the requirerments needed to become a firefighter.

COPS TV Resisting Arrest

Deputy Rick Lee of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office, FL patrols an apartment complex with a history of shots fired & drug calls. He quickly spots a vehicle driving across a grassy area that is not a designated road with his headlights off. The driver explains that he has a license, but the "Sheriff" has his license. The front seat passenger tells Deputy Lee that he was trying to get home and does not have any identification. The backseat passenger gives his name as well. A K-9 unit shows up and Deputy Lee decides to take the men out of the vehicle because he smelled marijuana in the car. The front seat passenger gets out of the car and immediately attempts to run from the deputy during the pat down. After a brief struggle with the man, the deputy takes him into custody and finds a small baggie of marijuana in his pants. The driver of the vehicle complains about the circumstances of his friend's arrest and tells the deputies his friend is a 'jitterbug'. The driver is given a warning for the equipment violation and is cut loose. The passenger that tried to run tells deputies he feels dumb for trying to run. He is informed of his charges. Later, Deputy Lee learns the man has a $50,000 warrant for weapons related charges.

LAFD Battles Major Emergency Fire in South LA Church

A roof collapsed while Los Angeles Firefighters battled a Major Emergency Structure fire in a South Los Angeles church building (predominately classrooms, and offices).At 5:15 AM, on March 28, 2016, the LAFD responded to 8401 S Hoover Street in the Vermont Knolls area of South Los Angeles to find a large two-story church building with fire showing and reports that people were trapped inside. Additional resources were quickly requested. Firefighters forced entry into the Greater Bethany EDC building and an aggressive interior attack ensued, along with coordinated vertical ventilation, and an initial search for persons inside.

During the intense firefight the roof partially collapsed and a "Mayday" was called, due to the possibility of a down, missing, or trapped firefighter. The Incident Commander rapidly requested a Company Accountability Report (CAR), fortunately all firefighters were accounted for and no one suffered injury. Firefighters began a defensive firefight, withdrawing companies from the inside and off the roof, to use large hose streams to pour water onto the blaze from the exterior. Approximately 125 firefighters, under the command of Assistant Chief Donald Frazeur, extinguished the flames in 1 hour 42 minutes. The fire cause is under active investigation by the LAFD Arson Section. The church building suffered significant damage and the estimated dollar loss and dollars saved is being tabulated. The flames were confined to the structure of origin and did not extend into near by buildings. It was later determined that the church building was not currently in use, but was occupied by homeless individuals that self exited prior to LAFD arrival. “We do this for the children, it’s all about them,” says FDNY Firefighter Tim Carroll of Ladder 34 in Washington Heights, who along with other members of Engine 84 and Ladder 34’s charity organization, The Lil’ Bravest, donated a custom-built gaming kiosk to Blythedale Children's Hospital. The kiosk was designed to resemble an authentic ERS box, and is made out of medical grade plastic with wheels attached for easy maneuvering into hospital rooms for children who are unable to leave their beds. There is a television with a PlayStation 4 gaming system on either side of the kiosk, so that two children can play on separate systems when the kiosk is placed between them. The Lil’ Bravest Inc. was founded to improve the quality of life for children who are hospitalized or being treated for childhood diseases. Their goal is to put a smile on the faces of kids who are going through a very difficult time. FDNY Celebrates Women’s History Month

On Thursday, March 31, the FDNY recognized the contributions of outstanding women from the Fire Department’s Firefighting, Emergency Medical Service and civilian workforce at the Women’s History Month Celebration, sponsored by the FDNY Quality of Work Life (QWL) Committee. The six female Commissioners presently serving with the FDNY were recognized for their extensive careers and devotion to public service, and seven honorees were chosen based on their performance, innovation and dedication to the work of the FDNY. FDNY Rescue 2, Engine 234, and Ladder 123 FDNY TV

We are at quarters of FDNY Rescue 2 at 1472 Bergen Street, where we see them, as well as Engine 234 and Ladder 123 as they all respond to Box 0925 for a kitchen fire in a multiple dwelling at 437 Herkimer Street between Kingston Avenue and Albany Avenue. In addition to these units, Engine 214 and Ladder 111 also responded, as well as Engine 217 and Battalion 57. Officers Paul Gasca and Gerard Bello pursue a stolen SUV. The driver of the SUV recklessly barrels down busy city streets as the officers deploy "spike strips" which successfully disable his vehicle. The desperate driver ditches the vehicle and attempts to flee on foot. He's quickly captured before he can disappear in a nearby casino. The uncooperative suspect turns out to be a homicide suspect who's wanted by the LAPD.

LAFD / FIRE IN A ROW OF COMMERCIALS IN HOLLYWOOD - KNOCKDOWN LAFD TV

LAFD Engine 52, Engine 82 first on scene of a vehicle fire in the alley parking lot on the 1000 block of North Western Avenue reported the auto has extended into a commercial building. The assignment was filled out as Firefighters attacked the fire in the rear of a row of one story commercial buildings. The fire involved sheds and storage. The main bulk of fire was knocked down with handlines in 45 minutes. There were reports that the building was threatened by angry individuals earlier in the day.

When Officer Erik Nelson of the Norwood (OH) Police Division attempts to assist a resident who claimed that someone pulled a knife on her, he receives an urgent "officer needs assistance" call from a nearby unit. Officer Nelson aborts his investigation and runs over to the scene of a traffic stop. When the officer arrives, he forced to use his taser on the uncooperative driver involved in the traffic stop. To their surprise, the desperate driver takes off in his vehicle and leads them on a dangerous high-speed chase. The pursuit ends when the several police units corner the suspect in a public parking lot. When asked why he ran, the driver claims that the officers scared him.

Structure Fire on Normandie Avenue LAFD TV

Los Angeles Firefighters first on scene at 6559 South Normandie Avenue had smoke and fire showing from the rear of a one story commercial building housing a “security gate” business. Firefighters quickly forced entry and attacked the fire in a rear occupancy, knocking down intense flames in 20 minutes. The fire was brought under control in 40 minutes. Firefighters encountered fire on the roof and had also laid lines into other small commercial buildings to the south, preventing extension. 

Toughest Takedowns, Deputy Kristi Estes, COPS TV

Deputy Kristi Estes of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department is in pursuit a vehicle which has been reported to be traveling up to 100mph on a local freeway. Officer Russ Martin assists in the pursuit by successfully deploying stop sticks in front of the fleeing vehicle the moment he passes by. The pursuit ends when the driver's deflated tires force him to pull off to the shoulder of the road. With their guns drawn, the officers order the driver to put his hands outside of his window. The unresponsive driver ignores the officers orders. As the officers assess the situation, they discover that the defiant driver's talking on his cell phone. The officers eventually extricate the driver from the vehicle and later learn that he fled because of a suspended license and three warrants for his arrest.

Officer Caleb Lenz of the Kansas City Missouri Police Department attempts to catch up to an officer that is in pursuit of a stolen vehicle that was spotted earlier in the evening. As he races to the scene, the officer radios shots fired and soon afterwards radios that he has been wounded in the gunfight. Officer Lenz arrives second on scene and finds another officer with the injured man and a witness frantically pointing out the direction in which the shooter traveled on foot. A quick search of the area turns up the shooter's shedded clothing. A K-9 Unit tracks the shooter to a garage and when the man becomes confrontational the dog bites him as he is pulled from the shed. He is quickly detained and the semi-automatic weapon used in the gunfight is recovered. The young man is treated for his wounds as Officer Lenz talks to the K-9 Officer about the track. Lenz is given updated information that the wounded officer will be okay and is in good spirits.

On Wednesday, March 16, dozens of active and retired FDNY members gathered to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the merger between the Health and Hospitals Corporation Emergency Medical Service and the Fire Department of New York. On March 17, 1996, the two groups officially merged, making FDNY the largest department based provider of emergency medical care in the country. This collaboration has helped the department continue to save lives and respond efficiently to the growing number of medical calls received each year in New York City.

FDNY Celebrates Bone Marrow Donors in Honor Roll of Life Ceremony

Alise Mareerose Williams may just be 6-years-old, but she's already experienced more than most adults.

The young girl from Evansdale, Iowa, had two open heart surgeries by the time she was 16-months-old, after being diagnosed with a congenital heart defect when she was 2-months-old. Then, during a hospital stay, the young girl's blood tests indicated that she had a rare genetic disorder called Fanconi anemia, and her family was told she someday would need a bone marrow transplant to survive.
Her doctors searched the National Bone Marrow Registry in September 2008, and found three perfect matches for Alise - something that almost never happens. On Feb. 4, 2009, she received the transplant.
Now, although her fight is not over, Alise's health continues to improve.
The perfect match for Alise was 37-year-old Firefighter James Wildes from Engine 162.
The firefighter signed up to be a donor in 2002, when he was at the Fire Academy.
When the Registry called him, telling him he was a potential match, he said he was thrilled he could help and did not hesitate to be tested further. He donated his stem cells at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital on Feb. 3, 2009.
Almost exactly three years later, the two met for the first time during the eighth Honor Roll of Life induction ceremony at FDNY Headquarters on Jan. 25.
Six other firefighters' names also were added to the Honor Roll plaque during the ceremony for their bone marrow and stem cell donations in 2011, including Lt. Salvatore Belmonte, Lt. Joseph P. Collins, Lt. Michael Kimball, FF Kyle Esquirol, FF Joseph Bordt and FF Francis Morrisey. There currently are 140 FDNY members' names on the plaque - some of whom have donated several times.
"This is one of the most exciting events that we celebrate each year," said Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano. "These FDNY members gave a part of themselves to save the life of someone else."
More than 8,000 FDNY members have signed up with the registry and representatives from the New York Blood Center (NYBC) said that 13 percent of all bone marrow donors are FDNY members.
"I always say that we can all be donors and we may all be patients," said Dr. Christopher Hillyer, President and CEO of the NYBC. "And FDNY members step up every time they are called."
Chairman of the NYBC's Board of Trustees Howard Milstein added, "Your heroism and dedication are an inspiration to all of us."
After Firefighter Wildes met Alise, he said, "I can't describe the feeling. To know I saved her, it's unbelievable."
He attended the ceremony with his wife, Mary, and their two children, Christian, 4, and Meagan, 16-months.
"I can't imagine what their family is going through," he said.
Alise's mother, Debra, father, Troy, and 12-year-old brother, C.J., also attended the ceremony.
"I have no words," Ms. Williams said. "I just keep saying 'thank you.' She's here today because of him. It's above and beyond a miracle."
She urged everyone to sign up to donate, "You never know who your match will be. Who would have thought a New York City firefighter would match a little Iowa girl?"
Mr. Williams said he was overwhelmed to meet his daughter's hero.
"Words can't describe it," he said. "I've seen my little girl die twice. If it wasn't for this man here today, she wouldn't be here."
Although Alise was a little overwhelmed by the attention she received, she had two words to describe how she felt after the ceremony: "I'm happy."
